EPL Fantasy Position Analysis: Goalkeepers

Goalkeeper is such a cruical position in both 'real life' and fantasy football, but as in the real world its a position to save your dollars in order to have the key attacking stars your squad must have.

The hallmark of a good fantasy football goalkeeper is consistency. A solid defensive unit in front of the number one is a major determinant when picking two keepers. However goalkeepers are assigned 1 point for every 3 saves they make, meaning Norwich's John Ruddy will make significantly more saves then Chelsea's Petr Cech but will accrue less clean sheet points.

After reviewing the Goalkeepers available in Fantasy Premier League 2011/12 I have classified the Goalkeepers in four catagories: Supreme, Above Average, Bargains and Steer Clear's.

Supreme

Supreme keepers are those who are expensive but are capable of consistently high scores throughout the season. Buying them will give your squad a strong foundation at the rear of your squad but affect the makeup of your entire team.
Here are the three keepers I consider to be the supreme keepers of the 2011/12 fantasy season.

Joe Hart- Manchester City (2010/11 points: 175) Price: 7.0

Last years highest scoring Goalkeeper returns to between the posts for Manchester City in 2011/12. Played every minute of lasts years campaign, making 114 saves and was perhaps the best contributer to City's 18 cleen sheets. Saved one penalty and even had an assist to his name. City should again be defensively strong this season and Hart will again play every minute, but is he worth 7 million? Probably not but fitting him in and you could reap the benefits.
Projected score- 162.

Petr Cech- Chelsea (2010/11 points: 158) Price: 7.0

The core of the stubborn Chelsea defense Cech played every minute last campaign, shaking off injuries which have plagued him in past . Weather Chealsea will be as strong at the back under attack minded manager Andre Villas Boas is too be seen, while at 7 million he's the most expensive keeper along with Hart and should produce a similar return.
Projected score- 160

Jose Reina- Liverpool (2010/11 score:
135) Price: 6.5
The reliable Liverpool shot stopper has not missed a Premier League game since 2006 saw a dip in point production last term with Liverpool struggling at both ends of the field. He still claimed 14 clean sheets but netted an own goal and suffered 4 yellow cards. This year Reina should return to his past form as the clean sheets will rise and fewer goals conceded as Liverpool are likely to apply more pressure in attack than season. A decent price (6.5) makes Reina slightly cheaper than the forementioned pair and capable of surpassing them in points.Projected Score- 154

Above Average

These are the goalkeepers many of you should be looking at. Cheaper than the three supreme keepers, yet these players are consistent and provide squads with points from both saves and clean sheets.

Paul Robinson- Blackburn (2010/11 points: 127) Price: 5.0

Robinson is a popular fantasy goalkeeper with his envolvment rate at both ends of the field. Blackburn's long ball game provides Robinson with assists (3 last year) and the odd bonus point. With Blackburn captain Chris Samba speculated to be departing Ewood Park, Robinson will be called to make more saves but concede more goals and his 8 clean sheets last term may not be beaten this year. Projected Score- 115

Tim Howard- Everton (2010/11 points: 124) Price: 5.5

Since 2006 the American has missed 160 minutes of football. Reliable with sure hands who forms a strong Everton defense with Phil Jagelka and Sylvain Distin. Constantly makes over 100 saves and keeps about 10 clean sheets season. With no new arrivals in the off season to bolster the defense means Howard will likely reach these marks in this season. Projected Score: 126

Mark Schwarzer- Fulham (2010/11 points: 113) Price: 5.0

The veteran Australian missed a large part of last season but accumulated a respectable 113 points. Fulham poses a terrific home ground capable of shutting out opposing teams reguarly. Expect 12 clean sheets and 95+ saves from the Aussie.
Projected Score: 122

Bargains

Bargains poses great value. Solid point return week in week out at a bottom price. Many of these players have returned from injury, are at a new club or have risen from reserve to starter.

Shay Given- Aston Villa (2010/11 points: 0) Price: 5.0

The experienced former Newcastle and Manchester City player had a frustrating season playing no premier league minutes, scoring 0 points. His move to Villa represents a coup for fantasy managers. A strong defense of Dunne, Collins, Warnock and Young will mask Given and provide 10-15 clean sheets. Given will record Brad Friedel like numbers when the American was between the sticks at Villa Park. Projected Score: 145

Ali Al Hasbi- Wigan (2010/11 points: 125) Price 4.5

Made a permanent move to the DW Stadium after spending last year on loan from B
olton. Wigan's average defense gave Al Hasbi plenty oppurtunity to shine making 121 saves. He has a great run of fixtures to start the season playing the three promoted clubs in consecuative weeks, and possibly gaining some clean sheet points. At 4.5 Al Hasbi would be a great back up to complement your main man. Projected Score: 138

Simon Mignolet- Sunderland (2010/11 points: 83) Price 4.5

With the injury to Craig Gordon, Mignolet is shaping up as the Sunderland number 1
after the pair shared duties last term. The Black Cats have spent wisely bringing in the experienced pair Wes Brown and John O'shea from Manchester United to bolster the defence and should bring more clean sheets to the Staduim of Light. Mignolet could potentially be the suprise packet amongst the Goalkeepers in 2011/12. Projected Score: 127

Ben Foster- West Brom (2011/12 points: 153) Price 5.0

Third highest total amongst goalkeepers last season while at Birmingham, now finds himself at West Brom. Manager Roy Hodgson is renown
for building strong defensive sides and should bring stability to the Hawthorns. May not reach 153 this time around but a is bargain at 5.0. Projected Score: 126

Steer Clear

Of course, like every position there are players to steer clear of for reasons such as price, team defense structures and poor fixtures.

Wojciech Szczesny- Arsenal (2011/12 points: 62) Price 6.0

Szczesny looks to have the Arsenal keeper spot sown up but keeping away from him is a wise decision. At 6.0 his price is too high for an unproven player. Arsenal are renown for dominating possession throughout the match only to concede scrappy goals. This results in the keeper not making suplus amount of saves nor picking up clean sheet points. Predicted Score 118

Others to steer clear of are Tottenham pairing Brad Friedel and Heurelio Gomes, Manchester United's David De Gea and Newcastle's Steve Harper who are all having either injury or selection issues.
